Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have long been the cornerstone of energy storage technologies. Known for their high energy density, lightweight design, and impressive cycle life, they are the backbone of electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage systems.
[pdf] The Botswana energy storage project is quietly becoming Africa’s dark horse in the clean energy race. As of March 2025, this $120 million initiative has already deployed enough battery capacity to power 15,000 homes during peak demand.
[pdf] Backed by our Alliance, and implemented by the state utility ESCOM, the project will install a 20MW/30MWh battery system in Lilongwe. The system will store electricity when supply is high and release it when demand peaks, helping balance the grid and support greater use of renewable energy.
