Chile has taken a significant step in the development of clean energy with the inauguration of the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Latin America. This milestone marks a pivotal moment in the country’s transition toward a sustainable and resilient energy future.
[pdf] The government of Chile will launch a bill this year to procure large-scale energy storage systems for commissioning in 2026 totalling US$2 billion of investment, on top of 5GWh already being sought for 2027-28.
[pdf] It is reported that this solar + storage project, known as Quillagua, includes 221MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and a 1.2GWh battery energy storage system, capable of providing 200MW of continuous peak shaving power for 6.2 hours.
